Do you need a CSP or a CIH? The cross-over from safety to industrial hygiene and back again is often a blurred line. Sarath Seneviratne will discuss the roles and responsibilities of what industrial hygiene is and when its specific expertise needs to be brought in. Find out what you don’t know you need to know.
Speaker Bio:
Sarath is a Safety and Occupational Health Manager, assigned to FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Her specialties include biological and chemical safety. Academic credentials include a MS in Environmental Toxicology and a BS in Microbiology (Honors). Sarath is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Sanitarians and a Registered Environmental Sanitarian (REHS) with the State of Maryland and the National Environmental Health Association. In addition, Sarath has obtained safety professional certifications as a CBSP (Certified Biological Safety Professional), a RBP (Registered Biosafety Professional), a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and a Certified Environmental, Safety & Health Trainer (CET). She has also completed training in Chemical Warfare and Emergency Management, Bioterrorism and Homeland Security, in Nuclear, Radiation, and High Yield Explosives, in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive Operator/Response, and in Hazardous Materials Transportation. Sarath has taken a number of courses from the Emergency Management Institute, which has provided her with knowledge of the Incident Command System.
Sarath is currently a USPHS commissioned officer Regular Corps, holding the rank of Captain. Past assignments include a detail (60 days) to Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), USDA to assist with a bioterrorism response plan and a number of environmental/safety audits at various facilities throughout the US. She has participated in many Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) deployments, including deployment on a public health mission to various Latin American countries on the USNS Comfort. Prior to the Commissioned Corps she was with the US Army assigned to Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (Defense Nuclear Agency) where she was the HAZMAT Advisor for the Emergency Response Team. Throughout her five years in the U.S. Army she advanced from Private to Captain, where she developed strong management skills by leading platoons of 40 soldiers.
